Washington, United States: The authorities of the United States will engage in nuclear arms control talks with Chinese authorities, according to the reports published by the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.
Reportedly, the talks will be the first since the Obama administration.
The major objective of the meeting is to avoid a three-way arms race between three major economies, including the United States, China and Russia. However, as per the reports by the Journal, this will not mark the start of official talks to set limits on nuclear weapons.
When questioned about the above, the spokesperson for the US State Department declined to share an immediate response to the request by the news agency Reuters.
It is to be noted that the closely associated teams of US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are working to make the meeting in San Francisco in November successful. Recently, the senior Biden administration official underscored that both the teams had an agreement in principle for both the leaders.
However, for now, the authorities have not shared the details in the public domain.
Several reports have claimed that the diplomatic engagements between both the countries, the United States and China, largely at US request, have acted as efforts to improve the deteriorated ties – following the US downing of an alleged Chinese spy balloon over the United States, according to Reuters.
President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping much-anticipated meeting in November
The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, recently announced that teams of both diplomats have been looking forward to a “constructive conversation” during the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum in San Francisco, scheduled in mid-November. This meeting between both leaders is much anticipated.
The officials were quoted saying, “There is an agreement in principle to meet in San Francisco in November. We are still working through important details needed to finalize those plans.”
According to the official reports, the prospect of the upcoming meeting was discussed between Biden, his national security adviser Jake Sullivan as well as Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi at the White House and at the State Department on Friday.
