United States: The concerns and worries related to COVID-19 infection are still high, and the health authorities are still engaged in studies to find out the threats linked to the disease. Experts and authorities have recently sounded alarm following the emergence of the new variant, FLiRT.
According to the reports, the family of the new COVID-19 variant – FliRT, has been spreading at a great pace in the United States. The group belongs to the Omicron JN.1 lineage and has been considered to be more dangerous than the previous variants of the infection. As per the reports, the recently spreading variants have been showing KP.2 and KP 1.1 mutations.
Reportedly, the concerns are heightened because the spread of the illness caused by KP.2 has been rapidly increasing and other variant – KP 1.1 is also circulating in the United States, according to various reports.
How do you explain FLiRT?
In accordance with the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the appellation FLiRT derives from the technical designations of its genetic alterations. Presently, within the United States, two FLiRT variations have been pinpointed: KP.2 and KP 1.1.
FLiRT: Symptoms and Further Insights
The manifestations associated with the FLiRT mutation remain relatively constant. Pharyngitis, a hacking cough, nasal congestion, lassitude, weariness, cephalalgia, corporeal discomfort, pyrexia, dyspnea, dyspepsia, and plausible gustatory and olfactory incapacities constitute the familiar symptoms.
“The mutations within the KP.2 and KP 1.1 variants furnish them with heightened infectivity compared to preceding Omicron iterations. Despite resembling earlier strains in symptoms, they necessitate stringent precautions due to their elevated transmission rates,” stated Dr. Sushila Kataria, Senior Director of Internal Medicine at Medanta, Gurugram.
The gravity of these symptoms typically hinges upon underlying physiological conditions and extant immunological status.
Is it Hazardous?
The current proliferation within the United States engenders apprehensions regarding an impending surge in infections during the summer season. Uninoculated individuals and those grappling with compromised immunity manifest heightened susceptibility to these genetic alterations.
“The variant propagates effortlessly via respiratory droplets, imperiling all individuals, particularly those devoid of inoculation and individuals with debilitated immune responses. Given its nuanced genetic disparities, FLiRT diverges from antecedent strains, necessitating bespoke management modalities,” added Dr. Kataria, certain reports mentioned.
The FLiRT mutations have yet to be detected within the Indian populace. Furthermore, within the United States, no noteworthy escalation in hospitalizations has been documented.
“It constitutes a marginal upsurge, warranting no cause for alarm. We ought to maintain vigilance and ensure heightened testing, targeted immunizations, and sustained adherence to prophylactic measures to thwart transmission. It is imperative to adhere to Covid-conscious protocols, i.e., thorough hand hygiene, mask-wearing, with heightened vigilance among certain demographics such as children and the elderly, as well as individuals with comorbidities,” mentioned Dr. Kataria.
