Washington, United States: The President of the United States – Joe Biden, a Democrat, has been trailing behind former US President Donald Trump in five out of six critical states, according to a poll.

The polling was conducted by the New York Times and Siena College on Sunday, exactly a year before the US presidential elections in 2024. During this, doubts regarding the age of the current President and his administration’s efforts in handling the American economy were also raised.

According to the recently conducted polls, Donald Trump was leading in important states, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania; however, Biden was leading in Wisconsin. It is to be noted Biden defeated Trump in all six states during the 2020 presidential elections.

The polls suggest that, on average, Trump has been leading by 48 percent to 44 percent in the six states.

The polls

The local polls, conducted to assess the national popular vote, have regularly shown that both the major competitors – Joe Biden and Donald Trump, are in a close race. It is to be highlighted that the outcomes of the polls are based on the outcomes from the so-called swing states, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

All the swing states were carried by Trump during the 2016 elections and they were very influential in his victory in the 2020 elections. Current president Biden has to perform well in maximum of the states to win the elections.

Reaction by Biden Campaign

Following the release of the poll in the public domain, a statement was released by the spokesperson of Biden’s campaign – Kevin Munoz. Through an official statement, he recalled the victory of former Democrat President Barack Obama over Republican Mitt Romney in the year 2021.

According to Reuters, Munoz was quoted saying, “Predictions more than a year out tend to look a little different a year later. Don’t take our word for it: Gallup predicted an 8-point loss for President Obama only for him to win handily a year later.”

He added and underscored that Biden’s campaign “is hard at work reaching and mobilizing our diverse, winning coalition of voters one year out on the choice between our winning, popular agenda and MAGA (Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan) Republicans’ unpopular extremism. We’ll win in 2024 by putting our heads down and doing the work, not by fretting about a poll.”

What do the polls show by the numbers?

Young voters prefer Biden by just a small margin, his lead among Hispanic voters has decreased significantly, and his advantage in cities is now only half of Trump’s lead in rural areas. Black voters, a key Biden group, are showing 22% support for Trump in these states, which is unusual for a Republican in modern presidential politics, as reported by The New York Times.

Comment by US Democratic US Senate from Connecticut

After reading these numbers, a Democratic US Senate from Connecticut, Richard Blumenthal, expressed concerns. According to the reports by CNN, he stated, “I was concerned before these polls and I’m concerned now.”

“No one is going to have a runaway election here. We have our work cut out for us,” Blumenthal added.
